Xiamen Ship Coating Testing Station of China Shipbuilding Industry, which affiliates to Luoyang Ship Material Research Institute, is a professional test and verifying organization for marine, offshore and protective coatings, including marine environment test, indoor accelerated simulation test and universal performance tests. not only qualified as the Test and Verifying Center for Ship Materials on Coatings and Paintings by China Classification Society (CCS), the station also approved by China Metrology Accreditation (CMA), China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), China Classification Society (CCS), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV), Bureau Veritas (BV), Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (LR), Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (NK), Korean Register of Shipping (KR), Registo Italiano Navade (RINA), Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS),Register of Fishing Vessel of the people’s Republic of China (CFR),with business scope covering the testing and verification for a full set of marine paints, including ballast tank paint, cargo oil tank paint of crude oil tankers, antifouling and anticorrosive paint systems, shop primer, topside paint, deck paint, cargo hold paint, boot topping paint , drinking water tank coatings and oil tank paint etc., according to national or international standards; for anticorrosive or topcoat system in atmospheric zone, splash zone and tidal zone for offshore platform according to NORSOK M-501 or ISO 20340; and for protective paint systems of steel structure, ocean engineering, municipal facilities, petrochemical projects according to industrial or national standards.
The station is located in Southeast Taiwan Strait with the typical subtropical marine environment. The annual average relative humidity is about 80%, temperature about 20℃, rainfall 1100~2000mm, wind speed 3.9m/s and sunshine time 1500~2100 hours every year. We have a 1000 m2 natural exposure field for marine atmospheric test in Dalipu Island, which is an ideal site for coating weathering resistance test. It is also one of two exposure test fields for marine paints approved by China Classification Society (CCS) in China. In the respect of seawater in Xiamen, it is semidiurnal tide, with tidal range 3.84 meters, the average velocity of seawater 0.20m/s and maximum flow velocity 0.67m/s. We also have perfect testing facilities for seawater environment tests, including four offshore rafts, one tidal zone platform and one natural seawater pool with an area of 1200m2. It is very suitable for antifouling paints to do shallow submergence test, erosion rate test, dynamic simulation test and high speed water flow test, and is the only approved sea area for verification of antifouling paints for China Classification Society (CCS), and now becomes one of the test sites for formulation selection and performance verification for many global marine paint manufacturers. Compared to South (Sanya) and North Sea (Qingdao), Xiamen sea (East sea)is more aggressive and has more foulings, with about 14 kinds of sea plants and 77 kinds of sea animals, and main species are barnacle,mussel,sea squirt, sea moss and lime insect. Xiamen sea is typically suitable for the test of antifouling coatings. The algae blooms from April to October every year.
The station has 23 inspectors,more than 80% of whom are of middle-level technical title or above, and has more than 150 advanced test equipments. In the past 40 years,we have developed more than 80% national standards in marine coatings, for example, GB/T 6822 《Antifouling and anticorrosive paint systems for ship hull》, GB/T 6823 《ballast tanks paint for ship》,GB/T 25011 《Test method and determination for DDT content of marine antifouling paints》, GB/T 26085 《Test method and determination for total tin content of marine antifouling paints》,GB/T 7791 《Test method for performance of reducing frictional resistance of antifouling coatings》、GB/T 10834 《Ship coatings—Determination of resistance to salt water—Salt water and hot salt water immersion method》、GB/T 31411 《Standard test method for erosion rate of antifouling coatings》 and GB/T 31820 《Paints for cargo oil tanks of crude oil tankers》,etc.. As a delegate of coating experts of China, we joined in International Maritime Organization (IMO) to discuss and draft Performance Standard of Protective Coatings (PSPC), and as well as several ISO standards. We have good understandings of the development trend of global coating testing methods.
The station can carry out testing and verification for indoor accelerated simulation, universal test for physical and chemical properties and determination of harmful substance for a full set of marine paints, offshore platform coatings, industrial protective coatings, steel structure coatings and corrosion resistant steel in cargo oil tanks of crude oil tankers.
