Testing of asbestos/VOC

Asbestos is recognized as first grade carcinogenic substances internationally. Adopted by International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2009,《Hong Kong International convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships》specifies that all marine products shall be tested for harmful substances during classification, operation and recycling. As a first grade banned substance, asbestos is not allowed to be detected. Thus, asbestos-free certificate is very important for ship owners. In our station, polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscope and  Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS) are used for qualitative and quantitative analysis for asbestos, like chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite.

In February, 2015, State Administration of Taxation in China decided to fully levy a sale tax on coating products with VOC content more than 420g/L. For coating manufactures, a certificate of VOC content is needed for tax-free application. In our station, Gas chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), high-precision analytical balance and water analyzer are used for qualitative and quantitative analysis for VOC content.
